Creating a website for the nation

Hi, I’m Ade Adewunmi. I work at the Government Digital Service, and I’m here to tell you about GOV.UK. We launched GOV.UK in October 2012. It replaced the two big central government websites; Directgov and Business Link. The idea was to make something simpler, clearer and faster; something focused on users. Firstly, we took a careful look and worked out what services and information we actually needed to deliver. We thought, for instance, that we could probably stop spending tax payers’ money telling people how to haggle when abroad or how to identify different kinds of waves. We eliminated thousands of pages that no-one ever visited. Then we made sure…

Our people come here every day and they get to work on really interesting projects, and they’re not bound by how we did it before or a specific policy or procedure. ALYSSA SHADINGER: I’ve only been here for…

Hetzner Online – Training as an IT specialist in computer systems integration

Hi, I’m Simon. I’m 17 years old, and this is where I work. I’m in the support office in our data center. Here, trainees do technical maintenance and take care of customer requests that they make using the web interface. In the network department, we trainees mainly focus on learning the basics of networking. For example how data travels through data centers via routers and switches, and we learn about the configuration of the networking hardware. We also study network protocols and other interesting topics. I am now in the Product Advice department. Here we answer general questions about our products. If, for example, a customer wants a special configuration…

Learning from dirty jobs | Mike Rowe

The “Dirty Jobs” crew and I were called to a little town in Colorado, called Craig. It’s only a couple dozen square miles. It’s in the Rockies. And the job in question was sheep rancher. My role on the show, for those of you who haven’t seen it — it’s pretty simple. I’m an apprentice, and I work with the people who do the jobs in question. And my responsibilities are to simply try and keep up, and give an honest account of what it’s like to be these people for one day in their life. The job in question: herding sheep. Great. We go to Craig and we check…

Why we have too few women leaders | Sheryl Sandberg

So for any of us in this room today, let’s start out by admitting we’re lucky. But all that aside, we still have a problem, and it’s a real problem. And the problem is this: Women are not making it to the top of any profession anywhere in the world. The numbers tell…
