I believe what these gentlemen are saying and understand some of what they're saying but too be honest this is way beyond my thinking

no I don't understand at all what they're saying but I love these great men, I can sense true honesty and sincerity and deep understanding of mankind and who we are

Scruton (22:00) The appeal of the foucalian view, of the post modern cynicism, is that you will never go unnecessarily wrong. As long as you assume the worst of everyone, always, you can't be disappointed. The cost of that, however, has proven to be far greater than its benefit. You can be wrong, but if you discount all the good in the universe as a matter of first principle, there is no limit to what you lose, and no point to trying to gain.

I would love to have been at Uni to have both Roger & Jordan in the same place educating me, I can listen to this talk of common and uncommon sense for ever. Thank you both very very much.

I  originally dismissed  Peterson  as  a  clever pop psychologist who had  created a name   for himself  by  loudly  opposing  political correctness>I now seem as a  much more interesting  figure. He is, in fact, the latest  example of the Canadian "Red Tory  tradition, embodied, in different ways  by Charles  Norris  Cochrane,  Harold  Adams Innis, Stephen Leacock, James Doull,  Douglas  Creighton, Hugh  Kenner, Northrop Frye, George   Parkin Grant and Marshall McLuhan.

A fantastic discussion about life and responsibility. Two very clever Guy's having a respectful intelligent conversation, doesn't get better than that

People need to believe in something, even if its not CALLED religion, even if the thing they believe in identifies as a REJECTION of religion.

I am Suprised that a person .. Dr. Peterson .. is able to describe so precisely the atrocities, the level of moral corruption, the level of bribery, and many other negative aspects that are fully manifested in a Communist/Socialist/Marxist kind of society/economy without actually living in that kind of society. You, Dr. Peterson, are absolutely Brilliant!!! This comes from someone who actually lived in a Communist/Socialist/Marxist kind of society/economy. Anyone who tries to bring about that kind of system AGAIN .. is so NAIVE.

I would like to suggest something. Can someone run an analysis of the correlation between birth control pills .. which are in fact little packets of hormones .. and the rise in neurological disorders in new born babies .. Autism, etc ..? There must be some negative consequences that derive from the consumption of hormones!?!

Jordan, you're right, feminist political posturing of "Are you a predator," usually with the wrong people, is undermining the presumption of innocence. It is the evil queen.

Many people see the incompetence of the powerful and wish to change that (who may have got what they have through violence or exploitation, but don't like the idea of it being taken from them by force) , but then the powerful may try to bamboozle people with alternate issues. Nepotistic Cowboy Builders & Dinosaurs try to maintain things that should be replaced. Politicians with little real power still seem to be able to meddle in the system and make things worse, effecting millions of peoples lives.

Jesus is Oedipus in the Trinitarian form. I admire him only so far as I don't have to believe in his pseudo-virgin-birth & pseudo-necessary death.
Edit: I also want to add that I reject the notion of him being a whipping boy on behalf of me. I DO ultimately admire TYR/TIWAZ whom Jesus is an emulation of. Note: I reject Moses but acknowledge Abraham.

when 2 briliant minds meet. Ecouter Sir Roger Scruton parler français est un délice https://www.franceculture.fr/emissions/repliques/comment-peut-etre-conservateur

  • Mofix

feels kinda wierd, they take this all too seriously, i did enjoy it but it just made it more wierd than necessary, we can all wear shoes and ties but it won't make us more human, infact behaviour in this war i believe is a step towards something less humane

  • itsallminor

Scruton is the enlightened one of original ideas here. JP a parrot he repeats what he has heard. And often makes a simple answer a long winded convoluted response that doesnt have a answer. Basically, JP sounds smarter than he may be.

  • Petri Claver

It's a rare moment when Jordan Peterson looks somehow a highly comptetent student in comparison to Sir. Roger. There was something weighty about the latter. I think it is a combination of aging gracefully, having strong sense of faith, and of course his knowledge—so calm, cool, and collected. Yet there was a moment when JP was at his best. We need more of this kind of discussion. In my humble opinion, I though it must have been nerve wrecking to sit between two gaint but the moderator got to do better than that. All in all, very good discussion. Thanks 😊

  • Matt Kail

This is such a tonic for the mind and soul in an age of screaming shrills. Its like intellectual camomile to see JP's Rule 9 in action: Assume that the person you are listening to might know something you don't. Sir Roger Scruton and Dr Jordan Peterson are two titans of reason and conservative discourse. I am now going to delete my YouGov profile before I got to bed as it has occurred to me that no one needs a never ending deluge of online bickering in their lives. And by the way, I'm sure that is the back of Douglas Murray's head in the audience foreground there – another one of the good guys of conservative thought-leadership. Night all.

  • Bill Tavis

two smart people but I can't really take them seriously on any of the political stuff if they're going to completely ignore the huge role that secret societies play in the mechanism of society. They are talking within the lower framework of understanding that we are taught in school in which things like Freemasons are not even acknowledged. Yet if you truly study history, Freemasons are responsible for most of the big modern revolutions, like America, France, Mexico, etc and directly instated the philosophies that these new countries would hold as their maxims. Acknowledging the roles that these groups play is the only way to have any sort of intelligent political conversation. I would recommend a video titled "Freemasonry and the Fabric of America" which is a speech given by a 33rd degree Mason and former Governor of Wisconsin.

  • Matt Spinto Smith

Really enjoyed this. But isn't Peterson being a bit-postmodern in places. Invoking fiction as the hyper-real—that's Baudrillard isn't it?

23:18 – Why? Why is there a will to believe this? Resentment. Frustration. Vengeance. The more competent, more talented, more "transcendental" , puts them to shame, spotlights their shortcomings for all to see, and instead of striving to try to equal that or even surpass that, it's easier to sour-grapes that, chop it down, throw mud at it, call it "evil", make them feel "guilty". It is their sly "Will to Power", which they project unto everyone, even the innocent.

  • Vir Quisque Vir

1:07:48 – How do we coax people back? Let it run it's course. Accelerate it to the dead end it is. Once people have run into the bitter end, once it breaks, a new transcendental light will shine in and people will choose of their own accord to come back – if they don't die in the process: drug overdose, suicide, reckless sex, driving, picking useless fights, etc. Being "holier than thou" will only piss them off more, make them more stubborn, more destructive of themselves and others.

Scruton cracks me up. Mussed up thick blonde hair he couldn't quite deal with after waking up, and his eyes still looking a bit puffy, half asleep. But – he has got his proper suit on. Wretched tie though. I keep wanting to change that tie!

Transcendence can be also formed by your environment and what you choose to expose yourself too and your own quest for it.

Such high level discussion, a shame I can't really absorb information from this unless I'm giving my undivided attention

  • Hi5 Tilinko

Hello Mr Peterson, this is a very interesting discussion, thank you. I would like to bring something to your attention regarding the search for the transcendent or its concept: Plato in his youth studied with Scythians. (So did Hippocrates and Euclid, and some others.) The Scythian ethics system has different foundations, it's not about the brotherly rivalry of Romulus and Remus or Cain and Abel. In the Scythian mythology and ethics system he who supports his brother will be the winner in the sense of gaining an ethical lesson and stepping closer to the transcendent (that's my understanding). Unfortunately the Scythians were practically written out of history even though their ethics system would have a lot to teach us.

  • AntPDC

I admire Peterson enormously, but there's something about him that depresses me slightly. I think it might be his proto-Messianic evangelism; his humourless demeanour; his agitated, highly-strung earnestness. I can only take small doses of him at a time, but I do appreciate his erudition and personal courage.

  • Joe24Law

What an annoying ad this video starts with! I wouldn't even listen to that guy, much less buy anything he's selling. However, on the non-critical side, I'm sure it's a good discussion/debate, and I'm looking forward to watching it. Thanks for posting it.

Sir Roger just referenced Janacek's obscure but great late opera "From the House of the Dead" at about 1:00. Now I know I love him!

  • OriginalLHB

The climax of Tarkovsky's great film Andrei Rublev at the end of the penultimate scene "The Bell" visually depicts the "blowing-on-the-last-embers" of a dying soul before it soars from black and white into color and an immense scene depicting the icons that Andrei came to paint after he emerged from his very dark night of the soul. This is certainly the most perfect metaphor I have ever encountered for the way people collaborate with God in bringing about the redemption of others. This is really a transcendent discussion!

  • David Halseth

I have found the transcendent to by quite mysterious. The Bible is full of the mysterious from the so called salvation to the atonement. Science, physics and astrophysics is filled with the mysterious such as DNA and the fine tuning of the universe. How did this all of happen and most scientists are scratching their heads now and having to deal with the possibility of that execrated Creator.

  • burtingtune

What Scruton says at about 19 minutes is similar to the first stanza of Keats' Endymion:

And such too is the grandeur of the dooms
    We have imagined for the mighty dead;

All lovely tales that we have heard or read:

An endless fountain of immortal drink,

Pouring unto us from the heaven’s brink.

  • Wakefield Tolbert

Though I appreciate these two thinkers (and indeed they are at the top of the game and see all the pieces and anticipate their motions on the board, for that matter) I wish we could somehow incarnate Western leaders of this caliber.

  • Nathan Stoddard

My god, it's so good! It's like mental masturbation!!! listening to/following along with what these two are saying is so euphoric… it "feels" so true and sounds so empirically valid.
    – Edit
My god, the comments are great too. XD rotflmao!!!

  • Nathan Stoddard

Most of the time I'm right along with the conversation (thinking: "exactly!" and then almost wanting to finish their statements; only to have them say something akin to what I'm thinking) but then there are times like 43:24, where I just sit in a stupor; thinking "what is he talking about, I'm not intimately familiar with this concept." (I'm thinking to myself "maybe art? music? I dunno").
And then as he continues to explain what he's referring to, it hits me; times like this stand as a testament to the reality that my generation and the ones that have followed since. Are (for the most part, or at least to a great degree) lacking this "common sense" understanding that an older generation takes for granted.
For them it's as plain as day, the truth of the matter was handed down/taught to them… we, most of us; never got that.
We need enlightenment like this talk, because once their generation passes on… it's going to be a hell of a thing to try and relearn/rediscover.

  • Nathan Stoddard

53:25 Watching this makes me think of the perceived position that "We" are/have become cognoscente of "the apocalypse" of our culture (just look at how popular apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic media has been in the "mainstream" over the last 10-15 years). It seems to me that "we" (well a large portion of us "those that are taking/trying to take a stand against post modernism") are collectively tired of it and ready to/trying to move on to something better (or to regain the good that was lost).

  • Dave 5400

I'm always a bit surprised that Jordan Peterson never brings up Charles Dickens' books when he talks about fictional stories that are really "compilations" of many lives. Boy, did he know how to write good stories. So good that people are still reading them 200-odd years later.
