Ricky Gervais And Stephen Go Head-To-Head On Religion

>>Stephen: HEY, EVERYBODY,
WE’RE HERE WITH RICKY GERVAIS. WE WERE TALKING BEFORE, ABOUT
THIS TWEET BEFORE, THAT YOU LIKED THIS TWEET THAT WAS
TALKING ABOUT HOW YOU WERE GOING IT TO GO TO HELL, THAT IT SHOULD
GET A KNIGHTHOOD. DO YOU HAVE ANY INTEREST IN A
KNIGHTHOOD? BECAUSE A LOT OF– A LOT OF
BRITISH PERFORMERS END UP, LIKE, GETTING A KNIGHTHOOD FOR SERVICE
TO THE COMMUNITY OR DRAMA. DOES THAT INTEREST YOU?>>IT’S NOT LIKE IT WAS IN THE
OLD DAYS. IF IT PLANTE I COULD GO DOWN THE
STREET ON A HORSE WITH A SWORD KILLING PEOPLE, THEN, YES. BUT IT’S NOTHING. IT’S NOTHING– GIVE ME A BIG
SWORD AND A HORSE, AND THEN I’LL TAKE IT. YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN?>>Stephen: TALKING ABOUT HELL
BEFORE, ABOUT THIS TWEET ABOUT YOU GOING TO HELL. AND I KNOW THAT YOU’RE AN
ATHEIST, CORRECT?>>YEAH.( APPLAUSE ).>>Stephen: PEOPLE HAVE BEEN
DEBATING– THAT’S THE DEVIL WAITING FOR YOU IN HELL, BY THE
WAY. DID YOU WANT TO DEBATE THIS? SO RICKY GERVAIS, WHY IS THERE
SOMETHING INSTEAD OF NOTHING?>>THAT’S– THAT’S– THAT MAKES
NO SENSE AT ALL.>>Stephen: YOU HAVE TO ANSWER
MY QUESTION.>>THAT’S NOT THE TWO CHOICE S.>>Stephen: THOSE ARE THE
CHOICES I’M GIVING YOU. I’M THE HOST. ( LAUGHTER ).>>WELL, I DON’T —
>>Stephen: DO YOU WANT TO CONCEDE THE DEBATE. WHY IS THERE SOMETHING RATHER
THAN NOTHING?>>WHAT DO YOU MEAN OUT OF
NOTHING?>>Stephen: WHY IS THERE
SOMETHING INSTEAD OF WHY IS THERE NOTHING? WHY DOES THE UNIVERSE EXIST AT
ALL? WHY IS THERE SOMETHING?>>BUT SURELY THE QUESTION IS
NOT WHY BUT HOW? WHY IS IRRELEVANT.>>Stephen: ANOTHER FINE, HOW
IS THERE SOMETHING? IF YOU THINK OF GOD AS THE PRIME
MOVER,.>>I DON’T.>>Stephen: IS THERE A PRIME
MOVER. IS THERE A DEMI-URGE THAT
STARTED EVERYTHING.>>OUTSIDE OF SCIENCE AND NATURE
I DON’T BELIEVE SO. SO THE INTERESTING THING IS–
THAT’S THE THING I’M AN AGNOVELTYIC ATHEIST. AGNOSTIC MEANS NO ONE KNOWS IF
THERE’S A GOD. EVERYONE IS TECHNICALLY AN
AGNOSTIC BECAUSE WE DON’T KNOW. AN AGNOSTIC ATHEIST IS SOMEONE
WHO DOESN’T KNOW THERE IS A GOD–
>>YOU’RE NOT CONVICTED OF YOUR ATHEISM.>>I AM. ATHEISM ISN’T A BELIEF SYSTEM. ATHEISM– SO THIS IS ATHEISM IN
A NUTSHELL. YOU SAY, “THERE’S A GOD.” I SAY, “YOU CAN PROVE THAT?”
YOU SAY, “NO.” I SAID, “I DON’T BELIEVE YOU
THEN.” SO YOU BELIEVE IN ONE GOD, I
ASSUME.>>Stephen: UHHH, IN THREE
PERSONS, BUT GO AHEAD. ( LAUGHTER ).>>OKAY, SO YOU BELIEVE– OKAY. BUT THERE ARE 3,000 TO CHOOSE
FROM, YOU KNOW, OF PEOPLE –>>Stephen: I’VE DONE SOME
READING, YEAH.>>SO BASICALLY, YOU BELIEVE
IN– YOU DENY ONE LESGOD THAN I DO. YOU DON’T BELIEVE IN 2,999 GOD. AND I DON’T BELIEVE IN JUST ONE
MORE.>>Stephen: RIGHT. ( LAUGHTER )
( APPLAUSE )>>Stephen: DO YOU DO YOU DO
YOU EVER HAVE A FEELING OF GREAT GRATITUDE FOR EXISTENCE?>>OF COURSE,.>>Stephen: DO YOU EVER HAVE–
>>I KNOW THE CHANCES ARE BILLIONS TO ONE THEY AM ON THIS
PLANET AS ME AND NEVER WILL BE AGAIN.>>Stephen: I KNOW I CAN’T
CONVINCE YOU THAT THERE IS A GOD, NOR DO I REALLY WANT TO
CONVINCE YOU THAT THERE IS A GOD. I CAN ONLY EXPLAIN MY EXPERIENCE
WHICH IS I HAVE A STRONG DESIRE TO DIRECT THAT GRATITUDES
TOWARDS SOMETHING OR SOMEONE.>>OF COURSE,.>>Stephen: ASK THAT THING IS
GOD.>>WE WANT TO– WE WANT TO MAKE
SENSE OF NATURE AND SCIENCE. IT IS TOO UNFATHOMABLE–
EVERYTHING IN THE UNIVERSE WAS ONCE CRUNCHED IN SOME SMALL
ATOM —
>>Stephen: BUT YOU DON’T KNOW THAT. YOU’RE JUST BELIEVINGLY STEPHEN
HAWKING AND THAT’S A MATTER OF FAITH IN HIS ABILITIES. YOU DON’T KNOW IT YOURSELF. YOU’RE ACCEPTING THAT BECAUSE
SOMEONE TOLD YOU.>>WELL, YEAH, BUT SCIENCE IS
CONSTANTLY PROVED OVER TIME. YOU SEE, IF WE TAKE SOMETHING
LIKE ANY FICTION, AND ANY HOLY BOOK AND ANY OTHER FICTION, AND
DESTROYED IT, OKAY. IN 1,000 YEARS’ TIME, THAT
WOULDN’T COME BACK JUST AS IT WAS. WHEREAS IF WE TOOK EVERY SCIENCE
BOOK AND EVERY FACT AND DESTROYED THEM ALL, IN 1,000
YEARS THEY’D ALL BE BACK BECAUSE ALL THE SAME TACKLES WOULD BE
THE SAME RESULT.>>Stephen: THAT’S GOOD. THAT’S REALLY GOOD.( APPLAUSE )
THAT’S REALLY GOOD.
>>SODON’T NEED– I DON’T NEED–
I DON’T NEED FAITH IN SCIENCE. I DON’T NEED FAITH TON PROBABLY
IF I JUMP OUT OF A WINDOW, EVERY OTHER TIME SOMEONE JUMPED OUT OF
A WINDOW THEY SMASHED TO THE GROUND BECAUSE OF THIS THING
CALLED GRAVITY.>>Stephen: AND THEN SATAN
WOULD BE RAPING YOU.>>THIS IS WHY I’M A GOOD BOY.>>Stephen: RICKY, PLEASE COME
BACK AND DEBATE SOMETHING EVEN MORE IMPORTANT. “DAVID BRENT: LIFE ON THE ROAD”
IS ON NETFLIX FEBRUARY 10. RICKY GERVAIS, EVERYONE!

    LISTEN UP PEOPLE.

When someone of atheist beliefs asks someone of religious beliefs “How do we know there is a god?”

And the person of religious beliefs replies with “How did the first human beings land here on earth?”

Now if the atheist replies with “science.” That is an incorrect or might I say dumb way to prove that god isn’t real. Why? Because science is just our interpretation of how the world and things beyond that work. If you think about humans have developed the science as a way to understand things. And another point is all things have an end, right? Every animal, planet, object, star will leave at some point. Now we don’t know when, it could be another billions of years or it could be tomorrow that a planet or star ends. My point is that God created everything to have a beginning and an end. Now you may be wondering ‘then god has an end too’ well no he/she/it doesn’t have an end. Why? Well I just don’t know, and I don’t think anyone knows. Please keep in mind I am not disrespecting anyone because of their beliefs I just wanted to share my thoughts so feel free to roast my in the comments 🙂 -A 12 year old who believes in god

As for atheist objection ,,Why are there diseases and etc.?" I say honestly…

I don't know why. I don't know why are there things like cancer, diseases, conjoined twins (God forbid it, that is terrible, it is rare and I hope it will be rarer as we go in the future) and etc.
BUT! I have seen and heard COUNTLESS arguments for God's existence, evidence for reliability of the Old Testament, reliability of the New Testament, evidence of Resurrection of Christ, conversion testimonies and others that these things that simply don't make me question God's existence, but rather simply ask Him ,,Why?"
Just like Jesus said ,,My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?" He DIDN'T said ,,My God, my God, why were You never there with me?"
    EXACT OPPOSITE!
Jesus is acknowledging the fact God WAS with Him, but He is saying ,,My God, my God, why have you FORSAKEN me?" Jesus is asking ,,Why are you not here NOW?"
Did He doubted His own Father's existence?
    OF COURSE NOT!
But, as He was divine, but ALSO human just like us, He still asked ,,Why?"
    But apostle Paul also says:
,,Do not grieve like those who have no hope."
    There IS hope!
In future, and it is long away, until Jesus's coming, whether He will come in five months or five centuries or five milleniums, that detail actually doesn't matter that much, but the point is that one day that WILL end. Again:
,,Do not grieve like those who have no hope."

The Bible has been destroyed and burned more than any science book, but here we are and it is still the best selling book of all time. Infact, the very institution that claimed to follow the Bible sanctioned its burning and destruction, and yet here we are with remote tribes having the bible in their own tongues. So, Ricky is disproved. Christianity and its writings started under great adversary, not comparable to any other religion or scientific study.

  • Kenzo T88

A little intelligence here for bouth of this gentleman. You can go And throw all the books or burn them it doesn't matter. 1 book will come again only 1 and that is the Qur'an why do research, the Qur'an is not send down written it has bis send down in the heart second there is so many Muslims all over the word and they are not even Arabic and they know that Qur'an by heart❤️ letter by letter dot by dot sentence by sentence . So burn them All it is only 1 that will come the same, Why becouse Allah say in the Qur'an – Sura 15 vers 9 Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian.
    we will preserve it.

  • Godsgirlie J

The argument is able to be solved but also it's a constant issue and debate… if we say we breathing air and we believe it yet we cant see it. We cant smell it but we know human scientists say it's there we need it but it's the same logic right… so I feel science isnt fully right because everything they say they go back and say is now killing us …..🤔🤣🤣😂 Science is not the same in later years so again the argument can go both ways and its humans that decided the religions …. we have to remember to respect others opinions and beliefs without condemning them

“The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good.”
    ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭14:1‬ ‭ESV‬‬

  • Akiraspin

I disagree with Gervais on the subject of burning books.

Were I an atheist, I would still without a doubt put money on people seeking for deeper meaning in their lives through spirituality and faith. Regardless of whether or not you think it's ridiculous you can always put money on people not doing what you expect them to.

The subject matter of the book is ultimately irrelevant, it is the emotions, feelings and lessons inspired by the books that people find meaningful. The pages themselves mean nothing.
Just like a science book is meaningless unless you can read it, AND understand it.

Example; You burn Lord of The Rings, and destroy every copy on earth, and erase the film from the internet.
You would still have people talking about it, and the very act of actively seeking to destroy it would encourage people to defend it, talk about it more, and ultimately have the opposite intended effect.

I've never met someone who genuinely believed that the events in Lord of the Rings happened, but I've also never met someone who genuinely believed that destroying the pages of a book somehow erase the fiction from existence.

"The Last Church On Terra" is a book about the 41st milliniuem and how the "Emperor Of Mankind" outlaws religion, deeming it primitive and destructive, he successfully destroys every last piece of religious iconography, literature, and genocides every practitioner who refuses to convert and give up their beliefs.
He then meets with the literal last priest, of the eponymous last church on Terra, a guy of a super minor religion of which he is the only remaining person on earth who believes in anything spiritual or divine. He was struck by a lightning bolt and survived miraculously, and devoted his life in service of his God.

The entire book is essentially one long debate about the pros vs cons of religion. The meaning of life. The arguments for and against religion or the existence of God.
The end of the book ends with the priest warning the Emperor that humans are ultimately extremely simple, they live, they live, they chase their dreams, they live the way they want, and then they either die with regret, or with fulfillment.
They are all individuals who can never be controlled, not even God, or lack thereof, has control like that. And never will.

The book ends with the priest choosing to walk into the last church as it burns and die with his religion than live in a world where he feels alone and without purpose, and before he dies he cautions the Emperor on the potential consequences of his actions…
The ultimate irony is that the "Emperor of Mankind" unintentionally begins a cult where people worship HIM instead, being more dogmatic, more violent, more ignorant, and more in control of every facet of government than any and all religions combined.

I think some scribe way back when we thought the world was flat and the earth was the center of the universe had a little dyslexia. He meant to write dog but instead wrote god and here we are today.

  • Thormp1

850,000,000 people around the world are Atheist, Agnostic or Non-Religious. That's more than 1 out of 10 people, making up the 4th largest belief group.

Statistics have shown that the more educated an individual, the less likely they are to be religious or believe in a god. 72% of the National Academy of Sciences members have a 'personal disbelief in god' and another 20% claim 'doubt or agnosticism'.

Less than 1% of the US prison population is 'atheist' vs. about 10% in the general population.

The Divorce rate among atheists and agnostics is 21% vs. 30% for Jews, 27% for Born again Christians, and 24% for other Christians.

  • Rachel Williams

Not sure I agree with Ricky when he says if you destroyed all holy books they wouldn't come back as they are.. I do see his point but I think religions all generally espouse the same messages and there are many of the same stories (the flood that happened in Gilgamesh for instance). I think religions might look different from the outside but are all reaching for the same thing.

  • Wolf Slayer

The really fun bit for me personally is watching how stupid you look….and are!!! trying to make or find your lame-brained excuses regarding the fact and truth that faith is a divinely GIVEN gift instead…..entertain me! I love it! :)))

,,Prove me God scientificaly, SQUAWK, prove God scientificaly with empirical evidence, SQUAWK, give me physical evidence of God, SQUAWK!!!"
I guess I am that guy that should define God to atheists in this comment section ONCE AND FOR ALL! And I am angry at you my Christian brothers and sisters, yes, I am, because you didn't remembered to say this!!!

God is all-powerful, eternal, immaterial, unlimited, all-knowing (and mountain of other many attributes with all- prefix)
    being!
There is no DNA track of His nature, no fingerprint of His nature, no hair of His nature, no ANYTHING physical that would prove us His divine nature!
If God appeared in form of an old man in heaven and then he started sending rain with His hands and then said to scientists watching ,,Go to your lab and investigate this." Do you know what would they find?
    ABSOLUTELY nothing!
    No track, no fingerprint, NOTHING!
Only thing they would find is that rain happened out of nowhere!
    THAT'S ALL!
God CREATED things like DNA, fingerprint, time, body and physical structures and universe
These are NOT part of His being nor is He AFFECTED by them!
    He is greater than them!
If Jesus was walking and doing miracles today, for example, if He gave sight to a blind man, scientific research would say what to that miracle?
Scientific research would simply say man was blind and suddenly he was no longer blind! There would be no explanation!
    That's all it would say!
If Jesus gave us His DNA and scientists took it to lab, what would they find?
    A NORMAL HUMAN DNA!
Jesus' human nature is not somehow ,,mixed" with His divine nature. There would be nothing special about His DNA! His divine and His human nature are united together, but NOT mixed! There would be no special type of blood or cells in His DNA! Because His divinity is ABOVE such things!

We wouldn't even be able to prove He was born of a virgin!!!
We would look at His DNA and find that it is like all our DNAs. It would seem like every normal human DNA and we would think He was born of a sperm just like us! It's because He was! The true miracle about His birth is that He created the sperm inside Mary and then entered into that sperm (or He took form of a sperm and entered Mary's womb).

(BTW: Uh (to my Christian brothers and sisters) did this sounded wrong or blaspheming?
And to God, if this was wrong, please forgive me, I meant nothing bad.)

But we COULDN'T prove that sperm came was created by God!
We COULD take DNA of every single human male that ever lived and compare it to Jesus's DNA and find there is no single human male who shares enough DNA with Jesus to be His biological father. But, of course, we can't take DNA of every single human male who ever lived and even if we could, NO ONE normal would loose his precious time for that!
God is not known and proved by science. God is above science. God is greater than science. We wouldn't know anything about God if He didn't revealed it to us. There are no possible human ways we can find out anything about God or determine whether He exists or not. If God of this universe was a deistic god, then it would be impossible for us to know anything about Him.
But God DOES reveal us things about Himself! We have NO other source for knowledge about Him! No other witness, no other proof, no other source, NOTHING! He is our only source about Himself! He is the only one Who can tell us anything about Himself! We have no one else to tell us! He is our ONLY source! No one and nothing else can tell us something about Him! And He does reveal us Himself, in some unknown ways and we have to open two MORE eyes to follow those ways!

God created time, physics, nature, space and everything else, and at the end, He (in a way) also created science. Looking for evidence in that is pointless. These things are great compared to us, but compared to Him, they are like dust and sand.
God is looked for the same way we look for persons in our lives. Except we look for Him in whole this life. But we will find Him once.

    P. S. Oh, atheists, you ever heard of that thing called love? You know, you guys when you meet some beutiful girl and you ended up thinking about her all day and wanting to spend time with her? You know that feeling? Of course you do.
You know what? Your beloved ,,flawless, all-mighty and all-powerful" science says that that feeling DOESN'T exist!
Your science explains why are you attracted to her body, but it doesn't even give a hint of do you love her or not! It is mute on that subject and, according to it's rules, that love you feel doesn't exist! If scientists went madly into science and started thinking it is only useful thing in life, they would tell you that you cannot love her unless you give scientific, empirical proof that you love her!
    Did you heard that?
    Did you?
Looks like science doesn't sound so great anymore, doesn't it?

What I hate about religion is that there’s a lot of them and they’re all bullshit. People are then conflicted and believe all of them are man-made. The Abrahamic religions are the only legit ones but over time Judaism and Christianity have been changed and are false. That leaves us with Islam, the final revelation from God (Allah). Islam is the fastest growing religion and many people are converting. There’s a reason for that… think about this and please research the truth which is Islam 🙂

  • Wolf Slayer

I think it's pretty obvious by now that some people just can't get their tiny finite reasoning minds around the fact that faith is truly a divine gift…end of argument obviously. I'm not blaming them…..I'm only stating a fact is all.

Ricky gervais is a fool who doesn't answer Stephen's question why there is something instead of nothing holy books came back even many times bible was destroyed in Middle East India and in Japan thousand years and five hundred years ago but still Christianity exists in there and those 3000 gods as gervais says they are not gods they even didn't show any sign as god just like god of the Bible did 🙏 they are just humans in example in Hinduism there are humans who were Kings and queens were worshipped as gods in India that's really not a case god is real Ricky gervais didn't answered where did big bang came from what existed before it he was a fool and Stephen was really a good man his faith will take him to heaven he never argued with anyone he just try them to understand the fact but they rejected it in end days this happens

  • J Whipple

never ceases to surprise me how someone goes from sounding like a normal human being to making threats that 'satan is waiting to rape you' because you don't share my superstitions. Nothing like a deeply held religious belief to make a person suddenly sound hateful and ignorant.

  • Bastardsword01

He is wrong though. Atheism is adamant in the conviction that there is no higher power. He is NOT an atheist, deluded as he is in that conviction.

  • SDSen

Who really cares for these kind of debates, let people be with their opinions, intellectual masturbation at best. Reality is you have this finite life to live, live it how you want own it cherish it become something in your life make a ton of money enjoy the riches be healthy. Keep it simple.

  • Julika Bryant

Let's just start a clean slate without history entirely. If you take down the statues that are offensive, and keep people too distracted to read older books, maybe the next generation (who don't even know who Beyonce or The Beatles or Gandhi were) will no longer need to use prayer or faith as a "crutch". Actually if the God of Bible inspired over 30 people over the centuries to write an historically sound account of the Jews… rulers & wars, the flood, and surrounding times, perhaps He would do it again if we burnt all the texts. 1 Corinthians 2 is a good place to start if this nonchalant dismissal of reverence towards faith leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Agnosticism is for those who give up on finding truth out there. It's beautiful to be able to accept everything and everyone, but it's a bit lazy as well. — Here cuz I love Gervais though!

,,Other 2999 gods…" I heard that argument a thousand times, and you atheists like to think God of Abraham is just like all other 2999 gods. Well sorry, all other 2999 gods are bizzare and absurd while God of Abraham is logical and He is the ONLY god who said ,,There is no God beside ME!"
Other 2999 gods love wine, drink, sex, they have affairs, they have bodies like men, they have a long list of bastard demigod children (I am looking at you Zeus!) and simply can't but punish anyone who doesn't do what they say.
God of Abraham is a perfect being that is above human lusts and desires.

Most similar god to God of Abraham is Ahura Mazda, who doesn't claim he is the only god, but says he has an equal, evil god Ahriman, and whose worship appeared after the God of Abraham.
This God that Abrahamic religions worship is described as an infinite, eternal, unchangeble, perfect, all-powerful being. Abrahamic religions all trace their origins to a man from a city of Ur called Abraham, and trace origins to five different prophets: Moses, son of Amram, Muhammad, Baha'u'llah (I am NEVER gonna spell his name right), Joseph Smith and Jesus of Nazareth. The first and last of these five prophets are also only COMPLETELY legit prophets among these five, not only that, the last prophet of these is not merely a prophet of Abrahamic God, He is also the only begotten SON of Abrahamic God!

If a god exists, it is either some unknown god (deistic one) or it is God Who spoke to Abraham, son of Terah of Ur. Now, which of these five religions that call themselves and atributte themselves to God of Abraham is REALY obeying His Word, that is a discussion for another time, but God of Abraham is the only legit and logical concept of God who makes any sense and deserves only attention, and He doesn't need temples and idols, He speaks through His followers, while all other need some images of stone and tree. All other gods need temples and houses, while God of Abraham has the whole UNIVERSE as His temple!

In Book of Genesis, God of Abraham is described as creating waters, seas, heavens, rivers, earth and etc. All other gods around the Jews created things separately. You ask the Cananites in 1 millenium BC who created this and that, they will list you mountain of gods. But you ask the Jews who created this and that, they will say ,,The Lord created it!"
    Who made heavens?
,,Lord created them!" they will tell you.
    Who made mountains?
,,Lord created them!" they will tell you.
Who made beasts of the field?
,,Lord created them!" they will tell you.
Who made fishes of the sea?
,,Lord created them!" they will tell you.
    Who made mankind?
,,Lord created them!" they will tell you.

In short, ,,2999 gods" is most stupid argument against the existence of God. It is used by atheist dude who claims he has great knowledge of religions. I found one article on Quora, and guy says ,,Most atheists actually studied religion and know more about it than religious…"
I mean, don't lie to me friend, don't lie to me, if you REALY studied religion, you would know Stark and Lannister difference between 2999 gods and God of Abraham.

    I mean, seriously.

  • Neil Simpson

Ricky Gervais is nowhere near qualified enough or intelligent enough to answer this question. Just another short sighted, arrogant, condescending atheist.

if ur an atheist ur deluded I’m sorry, the definition of atheism is a person who believes that nothing, created EVERYTHING, space, planets, stars, ocean, land, animals, season etc. If u believe that nothing created everything which is scientifically impossible, I don’t know what to say to u

Believing in an entity capable of creating life and altering a planet to sustain life. That is a question greater than where does the galaxy end. It may seem impossible indeed. A better question is,do we have a soul, and is there judgement? I prefer the philosophy,a planet will be bare until something decides otherwise. Religion on the other hand is all about judgement of the soul, despite preference, and order for the living.

  • Michael Miranda

Love Ricky. Most of those arguments arent original to his brain. But that one- the destruction of the science books vs religious text- brilliant. However- i don’t understand why atheists blame religion for all the death and yadda yadda…. if he doesn’t believe there is a god… then he believes religion and the concept of god to be created by humans. If he’s paying attention- humans do not need a reason to kill or maim or war. Therefore- he should see religion as just another reflection of both mankind’s imagination and creativity, as well it’s violence. Too many atheists still act like resentful children that just found out santa isn’t real. Let them have their fun stories, and if/when people use it as an excuse to cross a line- address it directly, fearlessly, and without cowardly hiding from certain religions while beating the dead horse/savior of others.

He's right that question should be 'how is there something rather than nothing'. However after that it seems either of them haven't looked deep into the arguments. The prime-mover idea is the result of a deductive argument of Thomas Aquinas/Aristotle, and should be a discussion in the 'deductive soundness' of the argument instead of matter of 'believing so' or not.

Ricky seems to be playing with the idea of scientism, which is OK if you actually practice science on a daily basis as a job but often fails miserably if you try to bring it to a discussion of God / philosophy because the scientific method is usually the wrong tool for the job. It's like bringing an metal detector to the beach to find diamonds? Maybe you'll still find something but don't hold your breathe. The existence of God is usually based on arguments from meta-physics, morals, logic, historicity, and will sometimes involves certain data points provided by science. Note there are specific scientific arguments for God (ie) 'Argument from design', but these are not considered very strong even among many theists in my opinion.

The argument of many Gods and choosing one less God sounds good but is not taken very seriously in the academic community. Sorry.

Ricky says; "I am an agnostic atheist, an agnostic means no one knows if there's a god, atheism is only rejecting the claim there is a god, Atheism isn't a belief system".

    Dictionary says:

Agnostic: a person who believes that nothing is known or can be known of the existence or nature of God.

Atheist: a person who disbelieves or lacks belief in the existence of God or gods.

If Ricky doesn't know if there is a god or not but also believes there is no god, then this is a contradictory belief. Either you don't know or you do know there is no god, you can't have it both ways.

If Ricky could provide evidence that god does not exist then his atheistic beliefs would be proved correct, otherwise his atheistic belief is just the same as any other false religion. On the other hand if Ricky only claimed to be an agnostic then that would be a more tenable position until presented with undeniable evidence of the existence or non-existence of god.

If you were to be honest with yourself you deeply religious people would come to the realization that you would be in a totally different religion, worshiping a totally different god had you been born somewhere else where Christianity wasn’t the mainstream religion. You overestimate your perspective. Even the most impressive minds are complete idiots in comparison to all the knowledge there is to know. So how about you just embrace objectivity and shun your personal predispositions and bias’ and challenge your every belief. And don’t say that you know your god exists because you” feel him” or “see his hand in your life” because how many other countless people say the same thing about their god? Do their subjective feelings matter less than yours even though they feel just as strongly? I know it’s much more comforting to believe if you do everything right you’ll be rewarded beyond comprehension, but just because you want it to be true doesn’t mean it is. Maybe there is some kind of god but I’m honest enough with myself to have the realization that I really don’t know. Having faith just means you want it so bad that you’ll blindly believe. And yes faith is blind. Because you’re not basing anything off anything except your personal subjective emotions. And besides the Christian god isn’t something that warrants worship even if it did exist. So he is all powerful in every way right? And completely level headed and just? I can show you countless scriptures where god doesn’t display these perfect attributes he’s supposed to bare. So god is all knowing as well. This means he sees the future as well as the past simultaneously. That means he knew Adam and Eve would sin and countless people would suffer terribly as a result. He knew this before he even created man or anything at all. So he basically set us up to fail on purpose. Then proceeds to place the tree in the garden of Eden telling Adam and Eve not to touch or eat from it even though he fully knew that’s exactly what they would do. So not only does he create ways to torture them by making them imperfect, having pain suffering, being kicked out of the garden, he even tells eve that she’ll suffer terrible birthing pains, but he doesn’t stop there. Not only did these two individuals mistake force them to be in exile and suffer, now he goes so far as to impose it upon all humanity. So punishing so many billions of people because of two peoples mistake is just? Don’t say god works in mysterious ways either. Because your not challenging the god you worship. That’s just a copout saying, “well I don’t know why he did this terrible thing, but my god would never do anything unjust so there must be some grand purpose!” If you are going to dedicate your life to worshiping anything you better be damn well sure that devotion is warranted. So maybe you’ll say oh well my life isn’t so bad god didn’t completely fuck me. Well how about all the people who have known nothing but suffering. Take a look around the world and you’ll realize you live a piece of cake life compared to most who have lived. There are people in torture camps being kept alive just to make them suffer as much as possible, people who wake up every day hoping they don’t get raided by another faction to be killed, raped, tortured, people who don’t have any money or means to get it so they can’t get basic needs like food and water, having to sacrifice some of their children because they can’t get enough provisions for them to all survive. Is this just? If you had children and one child stole something from another child would you beat them all for the actions of one? No that would be incredibly sadistic and cruel. That’s nowhere near the same level of egocentric sadistic methods god imposed. People aren’t just getting beat for 2 people’s mistakes but far far worse. Being tortured, raped, starved, dehydrated, or murdered. All directly because of your Christian god. Just because he created everything doesn’t give him the right to play with his toys as he sees fit. Sure he has the power, but might doesn’t make right. There’s another scripture I forget the context of but I believe it was about Abraham and the Israelites. God had finally gotten fed up with the Israelites and decided to wipe them all out in a fit of rage. Abraham begged god not to and “calmed gods heart” so he rescinded. So what do we take from this? If god kills you there is no hope for you anymore for he is the hammer. Yet he was about to smite many people out of anger until Abraham talked him out of it. If it was a rational perfect decision god would have followed through, but an imperfect man was the one to talk him down from his rage. A god who succumbs to fits of rage and throws a tantrum is certainly not a perfect logical just god. Think of it this way. God is alone in the universe and decides hey it’s lonely here I’m going to create some tiny humans and put them on a beautiful planet so they can see how great I am. If they don’t follow my rules and bow down and worship me then I’ll simply turn them back to dust. He just wants loyal blind subservients so suck him off telling him how great he is and if you don’t you’re just a stain that he’ll remove. In the Bible you’re supposed to constantly praise god and beg for forgiveness for you trespasses. This just doesn’t make sense in any form or fashion. So the only reason we make mistakes at all is directly because god forced us to. This isn’t Adam and eves fault…. because god imposed their sin on all of us. So it’s impossible not to sin and we didn’t do anything to deserve this at all… yet we’re supposed to grovel at his feet begging him to forgive us of something he forced us to do. There’s are countless other examples I can provide it you’re interested. The Bible is rife with contradictions yet is supposedly god inspired. This isn’t an attack on your personal beliefs, it’s an attack on the way you look at things. If you take anything from this, I implore you to do intensive research and do it with no subjective filter over your eyes. Seek objectivity and knowledge and above all else, wisdom. Sorry for the rant lol

I thought he was smart…There's only one God that people have a different idea about …and about science there are thousands of scientific evidence on The Quran which were proved in our time so it could be considered as a science book… that was stupid

  • Ceasar

There's something instead of nothing that's why God exist because logic…Also sour patch kids come in orange therefore Big foot is real.

  • david sharpe

if we just think for a few minutes about how we all exist, and how science has declared that we all are here because of a big bang, then there can only be one conclusion, we basically know very little about how it all came about, be nice to each other and enjoy life while it lasts

  • Camillus

The very fact people debate on the subject of god shows they are not sure of the present one even though they say they believe in this dominant fairy-tale which has been with us since 0 A.D. So cut the crap, keep searching the truth, some day maybe we will find it, or it will find us… They say you are the Universe/God looking at itself by means of this world/yourself. Why or how anything exists or came into existence… We will never know I guess…There will be always another question looming behind every answer… Quiet you mind…

I'm very happy about this interview, because they've agreed before hand to have this conversation on air. Talk shows are rehearsed, and questions are sent to the guests before they enter. Both Stephen and Ricky are lovely people, and whether you have the hope or not, society should get along just fine if we accept each other and debate nicely like this.

  • Unorthodo_x

Ricky pulled out two of the best points regarding this topic: atheist don't believe in 1 less god than theists and the universal nature of scientific knowledge. And the way he summed them up was brilliant.

  • Oldtinear

I have been watching a TV program about a ten year old boy with Pick's disease. He will be dead within four years. His brain is deteriorating so that he is losing the ability to talk, remember, or engage with his family. There is no treatment or cure.
    Where is God, you Christians?

  • cinedux

do you ever look in a mirror and think,"I look different today.Different from eighty four years ago-when I looked like an amoeba?"

  • fusionaut23

Stephen greatest comeback was when he challenged Ricky about that everything was crunched down to an atom. I don't believe that hocus pocus either. Science is it's own religion.
I also don't believe in outer space. NASA has been around since like 1958 and they still haven't produced any real photos of our "earth". Come on guys, wake the hell up! 🙂 It's 2019 we should be having a live feed of the earth spinning and people viewing it on a daily basis, perhaps replacing looking at the fireplace with the kids on the couch or on a romantic evening with your mate.

Gravity has also not been proven to exist. All we know for sure is the weight and density of something and I believe 14.5 psi of atmospheric pressure pushing down on everything.

0:45 secs in when colbert says I knoow your an athiest rickys face is screaming, really? Every show I go on its brought up. What's the big deal? Or is it just me who seen it? Also I don't agree with talkshows when they bring a guest on and they are athiest a banner pops on the screen. ATHIEST don't agree with that its 21st century who cares still?

  • NordVA

It seems to me that I am the only person who sees in Colberts "willingness" to discuss the intent of attack and victory over a known atheist on live television. The "that's very good" at the end is a way of getting out of this conversation, simply unable to counter argue, but still getting out with the head held high. Of course I could be wrong, but he just seems too eager to out-smart Ricky.
