POWER Promises Hosting Night Of Hope

WITH THE TRAGIC NEWS OF OPIOID ADDICTION AND OTHER DUG OVERDOSES, IT IS NICE TO HAVE A NICE STORY THE NEED FOR POWER SERVICESES IS STRONGER THAN EVER. HERE TO TELL US HOW POWER CAN HELP IS THE DIRECTOR AND A WOMAN THAT WENT THROUGH THE PROGRAM HERSELF AND GRADUATED. CONGRATULATIONS. THANK YOU. YOU GUYS ARE DOING SUCH GREAT WORK SINCE THE EARLY 1990s. TELL US WHAT POWER DOES. IT HELPS WOMEN IN RECOVERY BUILD A STRONG FOUNDATION FOR THAT RECOVERY AND WE DO IT THROUGH I CONTINUATION OF SERVICES THAT INCLUDES A HALFWAY HOUSE, OUTPATIENT SERVICES AND RECOVERY SUPPORT OR MENTORING SERVICES. WE SEE NEARLY 1500 WOMEN A YEAR. HAVE YOU SEEN THAT NUMBER GROW OVER THE LAST DECADE OR SO? WE KNOW THAT, FOR INSTANCE, OUR HALFWAY HOUSE CONSISTENTLY HAS A SUBSTANTIAL WAITING LIST. AND OF COURSE WE DON’T LIKE THAT WE WANT TO BRING WOMEN INTO OUR SERVICES AS SOON AS THEY INDICATE THEY NEED OUR HELP. WHEN YOU CAME TO POWER TELL US ABOUT YOUR STORY AND HOW YOU ENDED UP THERE. I WAS USING DRUGS FOR ABOUT THREE OR FOUR YEARS HEAVILY. I CAME TO POWER BECAUSE I FELT LIKE I WAS IN NEED OF TREATMENT AND I NEEDED TO GO SOMEWHERE. I WENT THROUGH POWER AND THE PROGRAM. THEY TAUGHT ME HOW TO LIVE AGAIN AND HOW TO TAKE CARE OF MYSELF, HOW TO LIVE IN THE REAL WORLD. SO I MEAN — IS HASN’T BEEN EASY. IT HASN’T BEEN EASY. BUT IT IS A PROGRESS AND I’M A WORK IN PROGRESS. AND SO YOU HAVE SEEN 1500 PEOPLE. 1500 WOMEN A YEAR. AND YOU HAVE A WAITING LIST TO GET INTO SOME OF YOUR HOUSING. WHAT ARE. SOME OF THE OTHER SERVICES THAT MAKE YOU STAND OUT FROM OTHER TREATMENT CENTERS? WE UNDERSTAND AT POWER THE IMPACT, FOR INSTANCE, OF TRAUMA, ON ADDICTION THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE SOMETHING LIKE 85 TO 90% OF WOMEN THAT COME TO US INDICATE A HISTORY OF SEVERE TRAUMA. AND THAT COULD BE EARLY CHILDHOOD SEXUAL ABUSE OR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AS AN ADULT. SO THAT IS AN IMPORTANT ASPICTURE OUR TREATMENT PROGRAM. — ASPECT OF OUR TREATMENT PROGRAM. PEOPLE GRADUATE FROM THE PROGRAM. AND WOMEN WILL GET THIS SENSE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT ONCE THEY HAVE GONE THROUGH IT. YOU’RE A GRADUATE YOURSELF? I’M A GRADUATE FROM POWER. WHAT WAS THAT DAY LIKE FOR NEW. IT WAS REALLY — HOW CAN I SAY IT? IT WAS AMAZING HOW I HAD TO ACCOMPLISH THAT AND GAINED SOME CLEAN TIME AND RECOVERY TIME. I MET A LOT OF NICE PEOPLE AND I MET A LOT OF WOMEN THAT HELPED ME ON MY WAY TO WHERE I AM TODAY. WHEN WE TALK ABOUT THE TRAUMA AND HAVING THE SUPPORT THERE, WAS THAT SOMETHING THAT YOU FELT YOU NEEDED, JUST HAVING THE PEOPLE THERE FOR SUPPORT? YES. WHEN I WAS IN ADDICTION, I WAS CONFUSED AND LOST IN THE WORLD, LOST IN THE ADDICTION THE WOMEN HELPED ME LEARN ANOTHER WAY. THEY HELPED MOLD ME AND BRING ME OUT OF WHAT WAS BAD ABOUT ADDICTION AND TO A POSITIVE LIGHT. THE PROGRAM HELPED ME A LOT AND GUIDED ME IN MY RECOVERY. I WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE BIG ANNUAL FUNDRAISE CLIPPER THAT IS COMING UP IN — FUNDRAISE CLIPPER THAT IS COMING UP IN — FUNDRAISER COMING UP IN JUNE. YES. THE MC IS BRENDA WATERS AND HAS BEEN FOR MANY YEARS. WE FEEL FORTUNATE TO HAVE HER AS SUCH A GOOD FRIEND TO POWER FORMER MAYOR TOM MURPHY IS OUR AUGUST NEAR FOR THE EVENING. — AUCTIONEER FOR THE EVENING. IT IS WONDERFUL FOOD AND MUSIC AND MOST IMPORTANTLY WE TELL THE STORIES OF THREE OF OUR GRADUATES. ONE OF WHOM IS HERE, YVONNE. AND TO HAVE SOMEBODY LIKE YVONNE THERE IS SO IMPORTANT BECAUSE, NOT ONLY IS YVONNE A POWER GRADUATE, BUT SHE’S NOW A POWER EMPLOYEE. HOW DID THAT COME FULL CIRCLE FOR NEW. I WENT TO SCHOOL. I WAS THINKING ABOUT WHAT I WANTED TO DO. I WANT TO HELP WOMEN IN RECOVERY THAT WENT THROUGH WHAT I’VE WENT THROUGH. I JUST GRADUATED FROM CCAC IN THE DRUG AND ALCOHOL FIELD. I WAS A VOLUNTEER AT POWER. AND THEN I DID ANY INTERNSHIP IN POWER AND NOW I’M AN EMPLOYEE AT POWER. SO I HAVE A CHANCE TO GIVE BACK AND HELP OTHER WOMEN THAT WERE IN MY PREDICAMENT. IT IS A HARD THING AND YOU NEED SUPPORT AND I WANT TO BE ONE TO TWO OFFER THAT SUPPORT FOR OTHER WOMEN. DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE OUT THERE IN THE HARDEST PART MUST BE MAKING SOME OF THE FIRST STEPS. WHEN YOU MAKE THE DECISION, JUST TRY STICK WITH IT, BE PATIENT. TAKE YOUR TIME. GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK. IT IS HARD. YOU GOT TO TAKE BABY STEPS. ENOUGH OF THOSE BABY STEPS CAN ADD UP TO BIG STEPS. TODAY IS YOUR FIRST DAY AT POWER? YES, MA’AM. GREAT NEWS. IN THE ANNUAL FUNDRAISER THAT YOU HAVE, YOU RAISE A LOT OF MONEY. AND IT GOES BACK INTO THE SYSTEM. ARE YOU HOPING TO EXPAND YOUR HALFWAY HOUSING IN THE PROGRAMS THAT YOU OFFER. OUR SERVICES ARE NEEDED MORE THAN EVER. AND WE’RE IN THE MIDST OF SOME EXPANSION FANS THAT WE HOPE WILL COME TO FRUITION AND THAT WE’RE WORK TOWARDS. BUT AN EVENT LIKE THIS IS VITAL TO THAT BECAUSE IT IS OUR LARGEST FUNDRAISER OF THE YEAR. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR COMING ON. CONGRATULATIONS. SO MANY WONDERFUL ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR YOU. BEST OF LUCK FOR YOUR NEW JOB. YOU CAN CELEBRATE THE POWER OF RECOVERY AT THE POWER OF PROMISES OF HOPE.
