COACHING YOUNG KIDS
IN ANY SPORT IS DIFFICULT. IT’S EVEN HARDER WHEN ONE OF THE PLAYERS IS YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER. MANY REC LEAGUES HAVE
A SPECIAL MOMENT IN TRAINING TO ADDRESS PARENT-COACHES, AND THE TALK
GOES LIKE THIS, “TREAT YOUR KID
LIKE YOU WOULD ANY OTHER PLAYER
ON THE TEAM.” WHY? WELL, BECAUSE
THEY DON’T WANT ONE KID TO GET SPECIAL TREATMENT. 1 TIMOTHY 5:21 SAYS, “I WARN YOU TO KEEP THESE
INSTRUCTIONS WITHOUT PREJUDICE, “DOING NOTHING ON
THE BASIS OF PARTIALITY.” IN THIS LETTER, PAUL OFFERS
TIMOTHY A LOT OF INFORMATION ON HOW TO LEAD A CHURCH. HE MENTIONS THE QUALIFICATIONS
FOR BISHOPS AND DEACONS, AND HE PAINTS
A PICTURE OF WHAT PASTORS AND ELDERS
SHOULD LOOK LIKE. WITHIN THESE DESCRIPTIONS
COMES A WARNING FOR TIMOTHY TO NOT FIND HIS FAVORITE PEOPLE
AND SHOW THEM SPECIAL TREATMENT. WHY? BECAUSE TIMOTHY IS
A LIVING EXAMPLE OF GOD, AND GOD DOESN’T SHOW FAVORITISM. HE LOVES EVERYONE AND WANTS
US ALL TO EXPERIENCE THE RICHNESS OF BEING
INCLUDED IN THE FAMILY OF GOD. THIS IS A BIG CHALLENGE
FOR US, TOO! WE KNOW WHAT IT’S LIKE
TO BE AN OUTSIDER, AND WE KNOW WHAT IT’S LIKE
TO SHOW FAVORITISM. YET GOD CALLS US TO BE LIKE HIM, TO SEE EVERYONE
THE WAY HE SEES THEM: AS MEN AND WOMEN
WHO ARE LOVED BY GOD. SO WHETHER YOU’RE COACHING
A TEAM IN A REC LEAGUE OR ATTENDING CHURCH,
ASK THE HOLY SPIRIT TO HELP YOU MAKE EVERYONE
FEEL LIKE THEY’RE YOUR FAVORITE. BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT
GOD DOES, TOO.
