Data Domain DD3300 – Adding Cloud Tier


In this video we will show adding cloud tier to an existing DD3300 system. Cloud Tier is a licensed feature that can be configured for DD3300 during initial installation or after installation has been completed using the Data Domain System Manager GUI. This demo will show adding cloud tier to an existing DD3300 system with a cloud tier license installed. Begin by logging into the Data Domain System Manger GUI. To add cloud tier start by clicking on Administration and then Licenses. Our system shows just an Active Tier license. To add your cloud tier license click Replace Licenses then click on the ellipsis at the right of the license file dialog box. Then select your license file containing cloud tier. Click open and then Apply. You’ll now notice a CLOUD license within the Capacity Licenses chart. Ours indicates we have 8TB of licensed cloud capacity. Before we can add a cloud tier provider, we must first disable the currently enabled File System. To disable the File System, got to the data management file system menu. Click on the Disable hyperlink at the bottom of the window. Then in the pop-up click ok to disable it. Now we can enable Cloud Tier by clicking on the ‘Enable Cloud Tier’ button. If a DD3300 system passphrase has not yet been set, you will be prompted to create and confirm a new system passphrase to be used for encryption. Next, a pop-up message indicating that cloud tiering moves data to a cloud storage provided based on data movement policies established by the DD3300 system administrator or by backup applications themselves. Click Enable. The next step is to add internal device storage for Cloud Tier metadata. To add cloud tier metadata devices, click on hardware then the storage menu option. Expand the Cloud Tier section if it is not already expanded and then click the Configure button. DD Cloud Tier uses internal system devices to store cloud tier metadata. Following best practices, we select both 1 TB devices and add them to the Cloud Tier. Selecting both ensures these 1 TB drives are reserved for cloud tier metadata and not used for the Active Tier. Typically the 4 TB drives are used for Active Tier, while the 1 TB devices are used for Cloud Tier metadata. Once you’ve confirmed the correct devices are selected click next to configure the cloud tier metadata storage. When complete a summary of the Cloud Tier configuration change is shown. Click Done to continue. Now that the Cloud Tier Feature is enabled and Cloud Tier storage is configured we can enable the File System again. To enable the file system go back to Data Management File System menu and click the Enable hyperlink at the bottom of the Window. Then click ok to enable it. The final step for cloud tier is to add a cloud unit and cloud storage provider to the DD3300 system. We do this by click the Cloud Units tab at the top. And then clicking add. Depending on the cloud provider and/or connection security desired, adding a cloud provider may require importing a certificate from the cloud provider. In our case, we have chosen to use Dell EMC Elastic Cloud Storage or ECS for short as our cloud storage provider using an http endpoint. We will name our Cloud Unit ‘ECS_CU1’ and then select Dell EMC ECS from the Cloud provider pull down menu. The ECS Access Key and Secret Key are required for this step, so we will enter them now. Here we provide endpoint details for the DD3300 to access the cloud storage. This is done by providing a fully qualified domain name or IP address and port for the ECS endpoint. This connection will be used to transfer data between the DD3300 and the ECS system. If you are unsure of this information, it can typically be obtained from your local cloud storage administrator or from your cloud provider account information located within your ECS, AWS, Azure, or Virtustream Cloud Storage account. If you are using a secure http endpoint you need to import the certificate from the cloud provider into the DD3300 before adding attempting to add the provider. In this demo, we are not using a HTTP proxy server, so we will leave it at the default setting of No. Before adding the new cloud unit is recommended to click the Verify button to ensure all of the information that you’ve entered is accurate. If there are any problems the verify function will help you quickly identify and resolve them prior to adding the cloud unit to the DD3300. Once all of the cloud unit information has passed the verification check, we click Add to complete the connection to the cloud storage provider. During this process the DD3300 connects to the endpoint using the credentials you’ve provided and then creates the necessary storage buckets it will use to store cloud tier data. If the DD3300 is not able to connect and to create the necessary buckets, the cloud unit add process will fail. Now that the cloud provider has been successfully added, the DD3300 cloud tiering feature ready for use. Consult the DDOS 6.1.1 Administration Guide and your backup application administration guide for additional details on cloud tier and the application-specific policy settings recommended for cloud tiering.     Question about licensing. If the system already has been licensed for X-TB capacity etc. and you've purchased Expansion capacity and Cloud Tier. If the existing capacity and features are not in the new license file will those feature be dropped? I.E. the system doesn't merge the differences?
