Chef Bill Fuller Hosting American Field Service Exchange Student

WE KNOW OUR NEXT GUEST CHEF BILL FULLER AND HIS GUEST. HERO IS LIVING WITH US THIS YEAR. HE’S AN EXCHANGE STUDENT FROM PAIR WAY. AND A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T KNOW WHERE IT IS. MIDDLE OF THE SOUTH AMERICA NEXT ARGENTINA AND BOLIVIA. TELL US ABOUT THE PROGRAM WHAT PROGRAM ARE YOU USING FOR THE EXCHANGE STUDENT? WE HAD A STUDENT LAST YEAR, A YOUNG WOMAN FROM THAILAND. AND IT WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE AND WE SHOUT WE WOULD HOST ANOTHER STUDENT AND HERO CAME OUR WAY. AND WE THOUGHT — BOTH OF OUR KIDS PLAY SOCCER, WE BROUGHT SOMEBODY IN FROM SOUTH AMERICA IT WILL HELP OUR SOCCER TEAM THAT IS A JOKE, BUT HE’S GOOD AT IT. WHAT ARE YOU LEARNED ABOUT BEING IN AMERICA? OF COURSE, ENGLISH. HIGH SCHOOL I SEE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MY SCHOOL AND THE HIGH SCHOOLS IN AMERICA. WHEN DID YOU GET HERE? AUGUST 11th. IT’S BEEN A WHILE. SO YOU’RE STAYING FOR THE WHOLE YES, TILL MID-JUNE. YOU HAVE A SIBLING, A LITTLE BROTHER AT HOME? YES. HOW IS THIS PROGRAM RUN? WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GET INTO IT? WE LEARN MORE LIKE MATURE IT IS LIKE TRY TO MAKE IT LIKE — I WANT SPA SPEAK ENGLISH FIRST. AND YOU GET TO EAT REALLY GOOD FOOD EVERY NIGHT. HE DOESN’T ORDER A PIZZA A LOT, DOES HE? IT HAPPENS. THIS IS LAST WEEKEND. WE WENT TO PHILLY AND HAD CHEESESTEAKS. THIS IS OUR DAUGHTER ZOE. HE EVEN MOWED THE LAWN. HE HELPED ME MOW THE LAWN. WHERE IS THIS? NORTH PARK. OKAY. GOOD. AND THIS IS THE PROM. HOMECOMING. SO THE LADIES ARE LIKING YOU? HE’S THE NEW KID IN SCHOOL. THAT IS HIKING. IT SOUNDS LIKE IT’S BEEN A REWARDING EXPERIENCE FOR BOTH OF YOU GUYS. AND YOU SEEM TO BE FOND OF THIS PROGRAM, BILL. IT IS A GREAT EXPERIENCE. WE HAVE A LOT OF ROOM IN OUR HOUSE AND IN OUR HEARTS FOR MORE PEOPLE. AND WE THOUGHT IT BE T WOULD BE GREAT TO HAVE SOME KIDS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES LIVE WITH US AND GIVE SOME EXPERIENCE TO OURSELVES AND OUR FAMILY AND LET THEM HAVE A NEW EXPERIENCE HERE. I LOVE WHAT WE’RE DOING TODAY IS THE REPRESENTATION OF YOUR COUNTRY. WHAT ARE WE MAKE SOMETHING. THIS IS LIKE CORNBREAD WITH ONIONS, PEPPERS, AND A LOT OF CHEESE. YOU MAKE IT LIKE THAT AND FLIP T. HOW DID YOU MAKE THIS, BILL? DID YOU KNOW THIS RECIPE? NO, NOT AT ALL. I WAS SURPRISED THAT I KNEW SO LITTLE ABOUT THEIR FOOD. IT SAY MIXTURE OF THE NATIVE CULTURES AND THE INCOMING SPANISH. THIS WAS A NATIVE DISH. I DID SOME RESEARCH. THIS IS A NATIVE DISH THAT WAS A BAKED CORN CAKE AND THE EUROPEANS SHOWED UP, THEY ADDED CHEESE TO AND DAIRY. IT IS A FUSION. I MADE IT FOR THE FIRST TIME YESTERDAY. AND I POSTED A PICTURE. I SAW THE RESPONSES FROM THESE PEOPLE. HIS MOTHER SAID IT SHOULD NOT HAVE PEPPERS. BUT I THOUGHT IT LOOKED BETTER WITH PEPPERS. BUT WE KEPT THE PEPPERS. AND THEN ONE OF THE THINGS IS FRESH VEGETABLES AND FRESH TOMATO SALAD AND OF COURSE, STEAK. YOU EAT A LOT OF STEAK THERE? YES. IS IT NEXT TO ARGENTINA. AND THERE THERE ARE A LOT OF COWS RAISED IN ARGENTINA. I KNOW YOU EAT STEAK. I LOVE STEAK. SINCE OF STEAK, WE’LL DO THREE EPISODES OF FISH. DO YOU SERVE A LOT OF FRUIT TOO? YES. IT IS TROPICAL AND SUBTROPICAL AND THE FRUIT THERE IS SO MUCH BETTER. BILL, WHEN YOU HOST STUDENTS, DO YOU GO BACK TO THEIR COUNTRIES TO GET A LITTLE BIT OF CULTURE AND EXPERIENCE FROM THEIR COUNTRY? WE DID NOT DO THAT WITH OUR PREVIOUS STUDENT. MY WIFE AND I TRAVELED TO THAILAND MANY YEARS AGO. AND WE VISITED PERU A NUMBER OF YEARS AGO. THE HISTORY IS FASCINATING, WHICH I DIDN’T KNOW VERY MUCH ABOUT TILL HE GOT HERE. THIS IS SOUP. WHY THEY CALL IT SOUP. STORY FUNNY. IN THE 18th CENTURY, THE PRESIDENT WAS TRYING TOMAKES A MISTAKE AND IT GOES LIKE THAT. IS IT REALLY GOOD IT IS DEFICIENCY. WHEN HERO SHOWED ME UP, HE BROUGHT THEY THIS LOVE BY CHEF JACKET FROM — AND THAT IS THE TRIBE THERE. SO TALK ABOUT THE PROGRAM AGAIN. HOW CAN FAMILIES GET INVOLVED IF THEY’RE INTERESTED IN DOING THIS? ARE THERE REQUIREMENTS AND DO YOU NEED TO KNOW ANYTHING IN ADVANCE? YOU HAVE TO GET CLEARANCES. YOU APPLY TO THE PROGRAM AND YOU APPLY FOR CLEARANCE THAT’S GREAT BECAUSE I WOULD NOT WANT TO SEND MY KID TO ON THE COUNTRY WITHOUT CHECKING OUT THE PEOPLE. AND THEY WILL SEND PEOPLE TO YOUR HOME. AND THERE WAS SOME EXTENSIVE INTERVIEWING OF TALKING TO US ABOUT DID EVERYBODY IN THE FAMILY AGREE WITH THE FIRM. THE LAST THING THEY WANT TO HAVE HAPPEN IS A KID OR ONE OF THE KIDS HATE THE IDEA THAT IS IMPORTANT. WE SAW THAT WITH SOME OF THE OTHER KIDS. WE ALL AGREE. MY SON IS 14 AND HE WAS 13 OUR THAILAND STUDENT. I DON’T THINK HE TALKED TO HER FROM AUGUST TO THANKSGIVING. HE DID NOT TALK TO HER TO ALMOST CHRISTMAS. HOW OLD ARE YOU? 17. ARE YOU A JUNIOR? YES. YOU MENTIONED SOME OF THE DIFFERENCES IN SCHOOLS. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE DIFFERENCES? THEY ARE SMALLER. AND I GO TO A PRIVATE SCHOOL. ALSO THE SCHOOL SCHEDULE IS DIFFERENT. LIKE WE START AT 7:00 AND YOU YOU HAVE TO GET UP AT 6. YOU GET UP LATER. YES, I GET UP LATER. AND HERO IS THE BEST KID IN THE HOUSE TO GET UP. HE’S IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL. AND THAT IS DIFFERENT TOO. IN — WE FINISH SCHOOL AT 12. WE’RE DONE. WOULDN’T THAT BE NICE. HOMEWORK, WHICH SOME PEOPLE DO. THANK YOU FOR BEING ON TODAY. THE STEAK WAS SO GOOD. IT WAS DELICIOUS. SALT AND PEOPLE AND CAT FIRE. SO GOOD. THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE TODAY AND LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE PROGRAM. YOU CAN HOST A STUDENT THROUGH THE PROGRAM. GO ON LINE TO LEARN MORE INFORMATION ABOUT HOSTING OR STUDYING ABROAD.
