BCIT Computing

My skillset was missing the technology part. I basically knew how to turn on the computer. BCIT felt like the right school to go to, because it’s a two-year program, there’s a lot of hands-on work, a lot of labs, a lot of assignments. When I come out I will be able to do things that I never thought were possible. Employers seek our graduates because of the depth and breadth of the courses we teach. And what that allows us to do is offer both the fundamentals of computing but also some of the newer technologies as they emerge. What I love best about my program is the small class sizes, and I get to know my group really well. We basically live at school together we laugh together we kind of cry together but we get the project accomplished together. BCIT prepared me for my career by giving me a lot of the necessary skills to hit the ground running at any company that I went to. Back at BCIT, they really gave us the foundation to constantly learn new things. We’re a brand everyone knows is quality. My students are working professionals. So they are there to learn more, they’re there to complement their skills, they’re there to advance their skills, so they find a lot of value in actually having working professionals teach the part-time courses. What I find really useful is being in the classroom interacting with other people in that class. You learn how to leverage each other’s skills. Students last night that are able to take whatever they’ve learned last night to work today. The high-tech professional programs are designed to get students in and out inside of a year – it’s what we call a fast-track program. They’re able to apply the skills they learned from class directly to the job environment. They like that they are able to deal with a real client, it’s not something they submit just for marks, a tangible thing they can put in their portfolio. Actually the last few years in the tech industry here in British Columbia have been absolutely astronomical in terms of the growth, in terms of the excitement. I think there’s so many great companies that are building to last. I think one of the things BCIT is known for is being very responsive to the needs of industry. And in the tech industry as things move so quickly that’s always the big challenge. So having a framework from which they can work closely with industry is an important part of what makes BCIT special. It’s a field that continues to evolve on a monthly, if not even daily, basis. Computing is exciting. I love being able to answer the hard questions. I like how data makes a difference. You get the satisfaction knowing people are using something that you’ve built. I want to see the impact of my work will have on a day-to-day basis.
